PIET (Parul Institute Of Technology ) has been ranked seventh in the top 10 list published by the Indian Patent Office of Government of India. Its ranking has surpassed all the 31 NITs put together.
All the 16 IITs, collectively filed 205 patents, have been ranked first, followed by Amity University, which has 140 patents, filed to its credit and the Indian Institute of Science, which filed 31 applications. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research and the M S Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies have bagged fourth, fifth and sixth positions with 16, 15 and 13 patent applications. City-based PIET shares its seventh rank with the National Institute of Immunology and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), with 12 patent applications filed each by the respective institutes.
The education institute is buoyed by the success and targets a rank in the top 10 list among R&D organisations.
The 12 patents filed by faculty and student inventors of PIET include innovative projects such as an intelligent energy meter and a device based on a novel method for controlling different home appliances, including a wheel-chair developed by the electronics and communication engineering department, a remote-controlled floor cleaning machine, a GSM-based wireless system for operating and controlling a generator set by mechanical engineering department among others.
